went to see mum yesterday. Still cracks me up when in midflow as soon as she says theatre it has to come out posh like "theyerter".

From what I hear, you're more likely to hear an Asian rather than a Cockney accent in Bethnal Green....

I never knew my nan but think she had mastered this. She took great care in how she spoke. She brought my mum up alone in the 50's, and despite growing up in a mixture of the Brixton slums, East Street Market and a Lewisham boarding house, my mum always had a very well spoken accent.

Lived in East End/City area...
Realised in grammar school I had to talk proper to get on in life...
Modeled my speech on BBC commentators and top people...
Paid off well...got into a big very good multinational company as a management trainee after getting a good degree...
Accent certainly made a difference for me...

My Nan was called Gladys one of five sisters, later in life I asked her what had become of her sisters and she said they were all dead the last one was opening her flat door in Camberwell when she was hit on the head and mugged on her doorstep in her 80s and died, made me sad.
Nan would have been 104 lived through the blitz, V2 took her house and half the street with it, survived on bread and dripping, pigeon pie during rationing, evacuated my mum to Wales sounded and acted just like Nan Taylor without the swearing.
She was hard as nails, Grandad died of dementia and she lived alone. She called me for a chat, l was living abroad and said what have you been up to, she said I’m up the steps painting the ceiling, always full of energy I said get down don’t over do it, she was 83, had cataracts just removed and a new hip, and a pacemaker fitted, three days later she died of a heart attack.
My mother carried her middle name Gladys also passed away a few months ago, brings it all home that the older generations are no longer and will never be replaced. God bless you Nan and Mum.

My 93yo Nan does this, especially when talking to doctors. Then when they’re out the room she’ll go gerrrrtcch you bastard

Just listened to it and found it quite interesting. Also a little as was reminded that true East End accents really are on the way out,never to return

My Mum used to go Welsh/posh answering the phone.
Yes it was as funny as that sounds.

The bit about going all posh when answering the phone is bang on and it wasnt just the Mums. My old man could swear for England but when he picked the phone up you'd think Noel Coward had turned up.
